This is a now-rare Pacific Helmet
Shell that has been made into an instrument called a Conch Trumpet
or Pu (in the Samoan language). It is an older Pu and has been in use
for many years. There is a HOLE is chipped into the end of the shell and by
pursing the lips one can 'play' it. A Pu is VERY loud and could be heard over
a great distance as a signal in Olden Times or also during celebrations and
dancing. These shells are getting quite rare here in Samoa now. I heard THIS
PU 'played' and it sounded loud and deep as it should. It measures 7-3/4"
long.
