BACK TO OTHER WOOD CARVINGS

This To'oto'o is made from local ironwood (IFILELE Tree) and has a skillfully done traditional hand-carved designs and spiral handle. It has the dark luster patina from burying it in the mangrove mud for a few days before the design was carved into it.
It measures about 68" long (may vary slightly) and is carved so that it can be shortened to coincide with a person's height. Top design may not be identical to the to'oto'o in the photo but very similar.

These are beautifully handcarved TRADITIONAL SAMOAN TO'OTO'O (Orator's Staff) and FUE (Orator's Whisk).
The To'oto'o and Fue were, and still are, a very important part of Samoan traditional culture. They used by an appointed Talking Chief who spoke on behalf of his Chief (Matai) when addressing assemblages (Fono). The Talking Chief stood and held the To'oto'o (or leaned on it) as he faced his audience. He also waived the Fue to accentuate points in his speeches as he stood making his speach. The Fue was also used in olden times as it was believed that by waiving the Fue it helped to bring the opinions from the Samoan 'spirits' into the speech.

FUE #1, #2 and #3: These FUE have up to 200 strands of finely braided (3-strand) sennet which is the braided, finely-pounded coconut fiber attached to a carved wooden handle. The hardwood handle has a beautifully handcarved traditional tattoo design or spiral.
